Ernie Eddy Memorial Children’s Ice Fishing Derby
This
is a derby for elementary school children only: It is a free event to
encourage children to enjoy the outdoors and the joy of fishing. 2005
event on February 19.
Whiskey Bay Pike Derby
This
derby encourages parents to take their children fishing and it usually
pays for itself. There are many hours of time donated to organize the
event.
The Whiskey Bay Salmon Derby is held every August the
week after the long weekend. The Association is a major sponsor of the
derby. We not only donate the grand prize trophy, we also offer a
$500.00 prize for the first 30 pound fish caught during the event.
In
the summer of 2003 the Association took over this event due to the
demise of the sponsor. Held on the 3rd weekend in August this
derby is looked forward to year after year. Seventy percent of all
entry fees ($14,000 in 2003) are returned to the event as prizes. The
other 30% is used for children’s fishing programs. For further
information, call Steve Elliott at 246-2507.
The Association has a permanent booth at the
Centennial Ground in St. Joseph Township. At the booth we sell varieties
of sausage on a bun, hamburgers and cheeseburgers. This program is
headed by Graham and Sherrie Kent and is a good revenue generator for
The Association.
Trout Pond
After
the demise of the Sault and District Anglers Association, the St. Joseph
Island Hunters and Anglers Association took over their large, portable,
live fish trout pond.
The pond is used as a fund raiser at local summer events.
The Association is a major sponsor of the Elk
Reintroduction Program north of Iron Bridge. Not only did we give a
large donation to the program, members of The Association volunteered
many hours, after the Elk arrived. Harold Cooper, a member of The
Association is in charge of tracking the Elk’s movements. The
Association has donated to the reward for poachers as well.
The Association has a big buck contest every deer
season. We have divisions for archery and rifle.
Wild Game Dinner
Each year the Association
has a Wild Game Dinner during which fish, fowl and game appetizers and
entities are served. This extremely popular event is consistently
sold out in the first few hours tickets go on sale. During the
evening, participants have the opportunity to bid on numerous silent
auction items and / or win one of the many prizes that are given away. The
event is one of the Association's top fundraising events.
Toy Draws
Each year, the
St. Joseph Island Hunters and Anglers Association holds a "toy" draw at
which time one lucky winner has an opportunity to win "toys" like boat
and motor, four - wheeler, snow machine or personal water craft.
This is one of the organization's most popular and profitable
fundraising events.
