Conservation Centre

In May 2002, the Association purchased the former Guenther Farms property . The 84 - acre property had numerous buildings on it as well as a man - made pond. Most of the buildings were so dilapidated that the only safe solution was to tear them down. The main building with a great deal of work, however, is perfect for our Association.

Our first priority was to stabilize the building and finish the soffit, fascia and siding. This part of the project was finished last summer. Now the task is to turn the building into an asset to the community.  The plan is to turn the building into the St. Joseph Island Conservation Centre.
The building and the property will be turned into a "conservation classroom" for Central Algoma.

The Centre will have an archery range, workshops, classroom and a small meeting area with full service kitchen. The indoor archery range will make year 'round archery instruction possible. The workshops will be available to local youth groups to make bird houses, nesting boxes and any other conservation related projects. The classroom and meeting room will be available to the public for small functions as well as groups such as Cubs, Scouts and other youth groups.

The property will be a hands-on classroom of conservation practices. Food plot techniques, wood lot management and wildlife conservation will be among the topics taught on a long - term basis so students can see the fruits of their labour. The centre will also be heated by solar panels, so, the building will be a working display of alternative energy use.

The property will also be the home of a campground for the exclusive use of youth groups in the area. The existing man - made pond will be improved and stocked with fish to introduce the joys of fishing to disabled children.
