| Throughout the seasons, St. Joseph Island offers many things to see and do. | |
In Springtime, marvel at the acres of trilliums carpeting the forest floor between the hardwoods. Watch the syrup producers as they tap the trees and collect sap before boiling it down to produce the best maple syrup in the world. Sample the fruits of their labour by attending either, the annual Royal Canadian Legion Maple Syrup Festival held on the first two weekends in April or a St. Joseph Island Lions Club Pancake Breakfast / Brunch held on the fourth Sunday of each month at the Hilton Community Hall. Year round you can stand on the shore at "Sailors Encampment" and watch ocean - going "saltys" and thousand foot "lakers" enroute to the locks at Sault Ste. Marie as they pass within a stones throw. |
" . . . a lovely, quiet, pastoral setting" |
In Summer, take a journey back in time to explore the ruins of old Fort St. Joseph or view a movie and other displays in the new reception center. Take a stroll through the pleasant grounds of Adcock's Woodland Gardens or drive the tree lined highway and biways and catch glimpses of the numerous deer and other wildlife that inhabit the Island. Tour the St. Joseph Island Museum and gain some insight into how the original Indian tribes and first settlers managed to survive in this then remote area. Golfers can enjoy a round at the new 9 - hole championship Island Springs Golf Course conveniently located just 6 km from Richards Landing. In Fall, view the maple, oak, beech, and other deciduous trees in all their glorious colours. Watch as Canada geese, Sandhill cranes and other migratory birds gather in large flocks prior to their annual flight south. In Winter, cross country ski one of the many groomed trails or break new paths across fields of virgin snow. Snowmobile from your doorstep on over 160km of groomed trails or follow the treeline out across the ice to either Drummond Island, Michigan or the mainland and the Ontario trail system. |
